Amish Puppy Mills

It may come as a shock to many Americans that the Amish community, known to have a good moral christian lifestyle, own 20% of puppy mills.  If you are unfamiliar with the atrocities of puppy mills, here is a brief description.   Last year, over 5 million dogs were killed in puppy mills, that’s over 11,000 dead dogs everyday.  Dogs in puppy mills are kept in horrible conditions.  The dogs used for breeding are kept in cages for their entire lives.  The cages are stacked up to 10 cages high, leaving the dogs in the bottom cages with a 90 percent chance of getting an eye or ear infection.  Their cages are made of wire, which their feet can sometimes slide through, making their feet sore and swollen.  If dogs are rescued, they are unable to walk due to being confined in such a small space so many years.  When the dogs are no longer able to reproduce or simply aren't sold as puppies, they are mass murdered by being drowned, shot, or even put into woodchippers.  Dogs in these puppy mills are routinely "debarked" by shoving a steel pipe down their throats.  The Amish consider the dogs in their puppy mills livestock, which allows them to commit these atrocities without any law imposing against them.  Nevertheless, outsiders are rarely allowed into these puppy mills.
It was once reported that in an amish-owned puppy mill in Berks County, PA a man named Elmer Zimmerman shot and killed 80 dogs after being told they needed to be checked by a veterinarian.  As if that information isn't disturbing enough, a local animal rescue stated that out of the 80 dogs killed, at least 70 of them could have been place in homes.  Although in Pennsylvania it is legal to shot ones property, its inhumane for these kinds of tragedies to take place.
You may be asking yourself how can the Amish behave so completely heartless while they are known for being such a peaceful non-harming community?  It is possible that since the Amish discipline their children so harshly, they are often abused.  This overly strict and abusive discipline results in continued abuse that is projected onto animals.  Questioning any sort of authority is not accepted in Amish society, which allows the puppy mill owners to have complete community support.
The Amish have created a deception to Americans that they are a peaceful, loving community, living in one with nature and its surroundings, while in reality they deceive the average american routinely with their secret abuse.

  1. well caroline, frankly i believe that the amish are doing fine things to these animal. Actually now that i think about it i am friends with a few amish players in World of Warcraft. They are great contributors throughout raids and other quests. Sometimes when we are in the middle of a big raid, my amish friends and i tend to take our shirts off and then you know.... jizz in our pants before we start raiding. things just get exciting in this world.

    nice blogging with you

    6. Ian is a troll. The Amish, to my knowledge, are not allowed things like computers, telephones, etc. He might be thinking of the Mennonites, but they are also quite conservative. Not all Amish are bad, but the majority of the Amish are like any other fundamentalist Christian religion. They are a misogynistic culture. They hide behind arrogance and self-righteousness. They are very harsh to their children and there is talk of child sexual abuse. They think of animals of any sort put on Earth for their own personal gain. I want no part of their theology or their God.

Amish have no electricity and they mind their own business. Stop creeping on them. They have their problems just like we all do. They just deal with their problems in more Godly way. They're not bbq pedophiles, they're not abusers there is some of the bad,but much less than our society.

    18. We lived among them for 6 years. One thing people may not realize is how poor their hygiene is. In general, the men stink. At the feedstore, they had a portajohn that they use and come back to the counter without washing their hands first. I was told by a member of the local county council, do NOT buy the food they sell. They do not adhere to anything close to what is considered clean or lawful cleanliness of their space or equipment. I could say more. The grime on their teeth...the way they feed a lame horse to fatten it up for slaughter. Selling puppies and killing the ones who don't sell at market because they don't want to try and sell and almost-grown dog.

  4. Let's not forget Diamond Acre farms in Seneca, New York where the Yoders gassed 95 of their puppy mill dogs instead of treating them with antibiotics for a disease that prevented them from breeding. He took a whelping box, hooked up a generator exhaust to it, and gassed the dogs in "batches" until he had killed about 95 of them.

They don't allow dogs in the house. From what I understand their religious beliefs put animals far below humans and they are treated like 'things'.

  7. Keep up the good work, Caroline! It's good for people to keep an eye on societies. The Amish should be called to task to clean up their own. The Catholics are called to task to clean up the whole sex abuse thing, why shouldn't the Amish be? And Jews, and Hindus, and Muslims and whoever else hides crimes against children. Your blog helped give a presentation which I am giving on the Amish today balance. They are not a perfect people. Good blogging!

I do not know any Amish people nor am I one, but all of the things that you are pointing out that are bad about the Amish people are statistically, almost four time worse in the general population. I think that people need to remember that just because a person has a blog, does not mean that they are informed, nor does it mean that they are intelligent

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. She's adding a voice in defence for the innocent lives being killed by the Amish people. Now, many people who read this WILL have a beef with them as well. Though not all of them have to do with the puppy mills, standing idly by their community & allowing this to happen makes them just as guilty. That's what the author accomplished.

  11. All puppy mills should be outlawed!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, by their very definition, puppy mills are cruel. The best breeders take good care of their animals, keep good breeding records, try to improve the breed, and actually take back an animal if the new owner isn't able or willing to keep it.

      Delete
  12. There is good and bad in all society, This does not excuse the Armish from committing these acts of cruelty. We, as the consumer, enable people like this to continue their evil practices because we see these cute, fluffy bundles of fuzz, and the Amish use that 'aw' factor to ply their trade. I agree that not all Amish people are good, honorable and moral and these individuals use the veil of the peace loving and virtuous Amish to hide behind. But we are just as culpable as these individuals for allowing this and not putting in place stricter laws and guidelines. Some Amish believe they are exempt from the 'English' laws as they put it and view all their animals as nothing more as disposable, money making machines, much like assembly lines for making salable products. This small portion of the Amish community view themselves to be above us because their community teaches them to shun anything considered 'ungodly' such as mainstream society. We are bombarded with reality TV shows about them and of course the media puts their spin on them as strict, upright, virtuous people who shun anyone who abandons their 'family'. We should be mindful of the fact that their ways haven't evolved much and neither has their mentality and it is hard to educate a group of people who think they know better than we do.

  16. I could understand that you believe that every life is sacred and therefore animals should also not be killed. Every religion , no matter how much they proclaim to be different, are all sadistic cults, with MEN running things, and a bunch of dumb, submissive, uneducated and brainwashed women. The animal abuse by the Amish is absolutely sickening, but I can't say it surprises me. When you worship a God who loves the smell of burning animal flesh, and is a cold-hearted and sadistic killer himself, who condones slavery, rape, animal sacrifice and ethnic cleansing, you can't really expect the people who worship this monster to be any better. With that being said, I agree with you, Patricia. Anyone that could hurt a precious and innocent animal is subhuman, and should be strung up, have their nuts or tits cut off, and then BURNED ALIVE!!!!

Some of them have very sophisticated music systems in their BUGGIES. I have also seen and heard them. Telephones? They all have cell phones now. I once asked an Amish friend how they can "get away" with having these things. He grinned at me and softly said "oh, we have our ways around things." Don't let appearances fool you. . . The only thing really different is - get this . . . They don't pay tax. They also use our roads and chew them up with the horses' hooves - they don't have to register the buggies. They let their horses shit on our roads and never have to clean it up. Yeah, ain't life grand?
